Garment and Textile Workers Union (GATWU)
The Karnataka Government by its notification dated 2-3-09, has revised the Minimum Wages for all categories of garment workers. The current Minimum Wage (basic + DA) therefore works out to around Rs.130 per day. This is a 25% increase in the statutory Minimum Wage, and the highest ever increase in minimum wages. The year long struggle of the Garment and Textile Workers Union (GATWU) contributed to this real increase in minimum wages, that too at a time of economic slowdown. However this is still much lower than the Rs.200 per day demand of GATWU – which is the minimum required for a family of garment workers to survive in Bangalore, as per a survey conducted by GATWU in 2007.
