DHL unions in India to forge new alliance
20 January 2012: DHL union leaders and grassroots activists in India are to set up a new DHL employees’ coordination council, designed to bring together DHL workers’ representatives across the country.
The unionists took the decision to establish the All-India DHL Employees’ Coordination Council at a meeting in Mumbai on 19 January. This key development will unite more than 1000 directly employed DHL workers in India, plus subcontracted and agency workers, giving them the opportunity to “speak with one voice”. The new alliance will also offer management a “one-stop” union contact point.
Ingo Marowsky, ITF organising globally coordinator, commented: “This is an important breakthrough for DHL workers in India. They are asking for no more than their fair share in the company’s success, to which they contribute every day, as well as respect for their work.”
Sangam Tripathy, ITF assistant Asia Pacific regional secretary, added: “There was an understanding that this would open up a fruitful dialogue and allow for healthier industrial relations at DHL operations throughout the country.”
